If you are a music fan and who lives off hip-hop culture, you’ve most likely streamed a Verzuz battle on IG. Verzuz was created during the Covid-19 pandemic as a virtual Dj battle by legendary producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. It was introduced through an Instagram Live broadcast in March of 2020.
Throughout quarantine, the battle series has grown dramatically, bridging together hip hops past and present.
The premise is simple: Two prominent producers (or singers or songwriters) pair up live on Instagram and compete to decide who has the better catalog. The rules came together on the fly through trial and error. As it stands, each battle goes 20 rounds, with each contestant playing a hit and hearing a rebuttal.
Verzuz is fun, simple, and wide-open — maybe a little too wide open. The audience is mostly in charge of the scoring, and there’s rarely a consensus on points.
Verzuz is making drab weekends and weeknights feel fun again and restoring a spirit of friendly competition to the game. It’s also teaching fans how many heads it can take to make a hit record. You might hear the same song at three different battles: once from a producer, again from a co-producer, and then again from a songwriter who helped fine-tune melodies or flesh out lyrics.
Verzuz has gained so much attention and growth that they teamed up with Apple Music back in July of 2020. They’ve had some of the biggest artists/producers go head to head including the creator’s Swizz Beatz and Timbaland themselves. It’s no wonder they continue to expand and venture into creative collaborations with other major networks.
Just recently it was announced that Verzuz will be partnering with the NFL for a Pro-Bowl Verzuz battle happening January 26th through the 29th. You can watch your favorite NFL stars go head to head showcasing their position highlights.
Be sure to tune in as the lineup of guests is going to be crazy.
